A CHRISTMAS CAROL 2016 release

Chesapeake Shakespeare Company presents
a holiday classic with a Baltimore twist:

A Christmas Carol

BALTIMORE (November 26, 2016) – With an original adaptation of the Charles Dickens holiday classic tale, A Christmas Carol, Chesapeake Shakespeare Company aims to delight all ages December 2 through 23, 2016.  It has a Baltimore twist: Scrooge lives in Baltimore.

True to the Dickens script, Ebenezer Scrooge will visit his past, present and future to find in himself the spirit of giving. Adapted and directed by Ian Gallanar, the theater company’s Founding Artistic Director, the play will be set in 19th Century Baltimore in the heart of the business district.

The address of Scrooge and Marley’s counting house is no coincidence: It is the 1885 landmark Mercantile Trust building, repurposed in September 2014 as the Chesapeake Shakespeare Company’s new 260-seat theater for the classics. Gallanar began working on his adaptation shortly after the theater company acquired the historic property to transform it into an Elizabethan-style playhouse.

“You shouldn’t expect a ‘Hon’ Christmas Carol,” Gallanar says. “Rather, we placed the story in the Baltimore business district of the 19th Century in honor of this magnificent building housing our theater, and this amazing city in which we perform. This is going to be a holiday celebration for the entire family, one that we hope will be treasured for years to come.”

In the lead role, he cast Gregory Burgess, a CSC Resident Acting Company member known for his warmth, humor and talent.  Also in the cast are 11 child actors from  area schools.

A Christmas Carol will run December 2 through December 23 at Chesapeake Shakespeare Company Theater, 7 South Calvert Street, Baltimore 21202. For ticket details ($29 – $65 adults; $19 – $33 students), visit www.chesapeakeshakespeare.com or call the Box Office at 410-244-8570.
