Measure for Measure

Measure for Measure
By William Shakespeare
February 7 – 23, 2020

“Haste still pays haste, and leisure answers leisure
Like doth quit like, and Measure still for Measure.”

Welcome to the original “Sin City.” Vienna’s puritanical new leader is cracking down on crimes against morality, and a novice nun holds her brother’s fate in her hands when he is condemned to die for a youthful indiscretion. She begs for mercy, and the new sheriff in town is willing to grant it… for a price. In the face of his shocking quid pro quo, Isabella won’t go down without a fight. But can virtue triumph over vice?

DRESSED FOR SUCCESS! Measure for Measure is slated to be CSC’s first strictly contemporary staging of a Shakespearean work in several years. “I chose to set this play in modern dress to keep us connected to the material,” shares Director Lise Bruneau. She adds “I, myself, as an audience member, find it so easy to forget that colorful characters in period costumes are still us, and their choices are our choices; their joys and griefs are our joys and griefs; and their mistakes and shortcomings our own as well. I love to make sure that we are constantly reminded that there are no “other people” on stage… we are up there, the whole time!”

Costume Designer Sandra Spence returns to CSC to bring us a reimagined world of twenty-first century politicians and bureaucrats, boho hipsters, modern day clergy, and bike messengers. You may even get a whiff of the Jersey Shore! We can’t wait to see how these sharp designs heighten this strikingly topical show, written almost 400 years ago.
