Othello is a monumental and searing tragedy, with a plot driven by the destructive forces of power, pride, revenge, and prejudice. Written in about 1603, Shakespeare’s tale follows the rise to prominence and marriage of Venice’s  army general, a Moor lauded for his military prowess and service to the city. He elopes with Desdemona, daughter of a nobleman; her father disapproves. Othello has arrived, however, he is never allowed to feel fully accepted. Tensions mount when Othello’s trusted ensign, Iago, is passed over for a promotion and responds with calculated wrath.

Founding Artistic Director Ian Gallanar will direct Othello. In the challenging lead role is Jason B. McIntosh, a Washington-based actor who recently gave electrifying performances in Fences and in Ruined at Baltimore’s Everyman Theatre.  CSC Resident Acting Company member Jose Guzman, last seen as Banquo in our best-selling  Macbeth, will scorch the stage as Iago. (Ever notice that bad guys get so many great lines?) Diane Curley, who glittered in our 2015-2016 season opener, Much Ado About Nothing, returns as Othello’s love, Desdemona.
