Together, Henry IV, Part I and Part II tell the spellbinding chronicle of the roguish Prince Hal, who is pulled between the magnetic, funny, and dissolute Falstaff and his dutiful and despondent father, King Henry. Rarely performed, individually or together, these brilliant plays are a bounty of drama and comedy for any Shakespeare-lover. See both!
Henry IV, Part I
By William Shakespeare
February 15 – March 30, 2019
Falstaff: Banish plump Jack, and banish all the world.
Prince: I do; I will.
After he takes the throne from Richard II, Henry IV’s reign is bedeviled by rebellion, political intrigue, and the antics of his heir. Young Prince Hal forsakes the burdens of royalty to carouse with rogues and fools led by his mentor and friend, the riotous Jack Falstaff. Hal’s maturity and mettle soon will be tested. To secure his own future, he must face his cousin, Henry Hotspur, at the pivotal Battle at Shrewsbury. The play shines as Shakespeare explores the father-son relationship.
Henry IV, Part II
By William Shakespeare
March 15 – April 7, 2019
“Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown.”
As King Henry IV nears death, warring among the nobility continues: The defeated rebels regroup, aligned now with Northumberland against the crown. Prince Hal’s friend, the aging tavern-brawler Falstaff, is up to his unscrupulous tricks and scene-stealing humor. Hal avoids responsibility for a time but cannot put off the inevitable as his father fades. Through Hal’s journey to the throne, Shakespeare invites us to explore themes of family, duty, leadership, succession, and legacy. Click here for tickets to Part II.
