Seeking actors of any race or ethnicity, any gender or gender expression, or any age (18+). Performers of all races and ethnicities are encouraged to submit for the following roles…
Imogen: daughter to Cymbeline, wife to Posthumous. Huge capacity for love. Rebellious. Intimacy includes kissing Posthumous and Iachimo’s bedroom break-in while she is asleep. In this latter scene, Iachimo steals a bracelet from her wrist, pulls a blanket aside to see a mole on her chest, and may touch her hair, face, body. The scene provides a lot of room for interpretation. We will create and choreograph the physical story together with a focus on consent and collaboration.
Queen: second wife to Cymbeline. Evil stepmother. Conniving, scheming, presents false self to the world, while plotting murders in secret. Person playing Queen will double as Belaria.
Belaria: a noblewoman. Kidnapped Cymbeline’s two sons and raised them in wilderness as if they were her own. Loves sons. Burning hate for Cymbeline, the court, and the material world. Person playing Belaria will double as Queen.
Iachimo: an Italian noble and provocateur. Female, but one of the guys. Intimacy includes bedroom break-in while Imogen is asleep. Iachimo steals a bracelet from her wrist, pulls a blanket aside to see a mole on her chest, and may touch her hair, face, body. The scene provides a lot of room for interpretation. We will create and choreograph the physical story together with a focus on consent and collaboration.
Caius Lucius: Italian ambassador from Rome and Emperor Claudius. Warrior. A very good person, but will kill his child if the Emperor orders him.
Posthumous: husband to Imogen. Loyal, still figuring himself out. Person playing Posthumous will double as Cloten (with very different physicality.) Intimacy includes kissing Imogen.
Cloten: son to the Queen. Spoiled, brawn first, a bit of a Napoleon, is easily confused by words. Person playing Cloten will double as Posthumous (with very different physicality.)
Cymbeline: King of the Britons, father to Imogen. A good, if slightly impulsive, ruler.
Pisanio: servant to Posthumous and Imogen. A garden variety servant/assistant tossed into the center of high stakes geopolitics, doing their best to keep Imogen safe.
Guiderius: Cymbeline’s eldest son and Imogen’s brother. Raised in wilderness. A bit comic in caveman-like innocence, guilelessness, strength, resourcefulness, huge capacity for feeling, and lack of social decorum or ‘acculturation’. Guiderius is more bold, action-driven than Arviragus, his brother.
Arviragus: Cymbeline’s youngest son and Imogen’s brother. Raised in wilderness. A bit comic in caveman-like innocence, guilelessness, strength, resourcefulness, huge capacity for feeling, and lack of social decorum or ‘acculturation’. Arviragus is more sensitive than Guiderius, his brother.
Compensation is a minimum of $2800.

PERFORMANCE USHER: This is the most common volunteer option. Help us welcome in our patrons to both our Downtown Theatre on Calvert Street, and our summer outdoor venue at the PFI Historic Park in Ellicott City, MD. Duties for the downtown location include but are not limited to scanning tickets, checking vaccination or health records, showing patrons to their seats, handing out parking vouchers and wine slips, and greeting our patrons as they arrive. At our outdoor location, we also ask volunteers that are able to help set up and take down folding chairs for each performance.
EDUCATION EVENTS: Assist the education team as they usher in Baltimore area students for our 10am student matinees. These events are not ticketed and are set up in accordance with school curriculum to introduce young audiences to the magic of Shakespeare. Performances are often only 90 minutes and include a Q & A session following. Other Educational opportunities may include events located in our Studio space around the corner from the theatre on Redwood street. This space plays host to the Black Classical Acting Ensemble as well as CSC Summer Camps and Classes.
GENERAL OFFICE HELP: A few times a season we may need help folding, stuffing, and sealing envelopes for large business or development mailings. This is a fun way to get to know the staff and help us grow our reach in Baltimore and beyond!
DISTRIBUTING POSTERS/FLYERS: Occasionally we will want to place a poster of our show or stacks of postcards within various neighborhoods to reach an audience that may not know us yet. Often, you might live or work in that area and can ask local businesses to place these posters or postcards in an approved location where patrons can access them. This opportunity is arranged with the consent of our marketing department to targeted neighborhoods decided on a show-by-show basis.
If you are interested in any of the above-mentioned opportunities, please email volunteer@chesapeakeshakespeare.com. We’d love to have you support our team.
