A great theater is more than a building with a stage. A great theatre company is dedicated to building and connecting communities through outreach and educational programming.
Here at CSC, we uphold our mission by performing in nontraditional spaces and reaching out to audiences that do not have easy access to the arts. We build partnerships with organizations that share our understanding of the power of the arts to illuminate the human condition, address society’s major questions, and change lives for the better. We are excited about creative place-making, and the opportunity to contribute to improving downtown Baltimore for its 9-to-5 workers, growing residential population, and visitors.

We cannot do it without partners, including the Friends of Chesapeake Shakespeare Company, our leadership circle. We are also incredibly indebted to our friendly CSC Volunteers, who give their time and talent for our community outreach efforts.
How much fun is community outreach with CSC?
- One of CSC’s best-known initiatives is the annual Free Shakespeare for Kids program, which provides complimentary tickets for children under age 19 to see our outdoor performances in Ellicott City. These tickets are underwritten by corporate sponsors.
- We have had Pub Nights — informal evenings spent discussing Shakespeare over a pint.
- We have shared our summer stage with young artists, university interns, and emerging talent in the community. Each summer at our outdoor performances in Ellicott City, our Show Before the Show features local performers, including spoken word artists and children’s dance troupes.
- Last year, CSC advised two Howard County Girl Scouts as they earned the prestigious Silver Award: They created “Salute to Independent Women,” a children’s activity book about women in literature, history, and contemporary society.
- At Artscape 2014, CSC provided a stage combat demonstration at the tent of the Greater Baltimore Cultural Alliance. Kids and families learned about the choreography of sword-fighting for the stage.
- In collaboration with Maryland Public Television’s airing of the Hollow Crown series, CSC led “flash mob” audience participation readings of the St. Crispin’s Day speech at the 2014 Baltimore Book Festival.
